Level 21 Rooftop Garden
The rooftop garden at is the highest publicly accessible planted space in central Wellington - 340 square metres of native New Zealand flora positioned 21 floors above the waterfront, open to hotel guests throughout the year. The planting scheme was designed in partnership with the Zealandia Ecosanctuary team, using the same species-selection philosophy that guides the valley restoration project on the city's western ridge. It is a space built for thinking, meeting, or simply watching the weather move across Cook Strait from a position that very few people ever reach.
Zealandia-Partnered Planting
Every species on the rooftop was selected in collaboration with Zealandia's horticultural team - the same organisation managing New Zealand's largest urban wildlife sanctuary two kilometres to the west.
Heated Seating Alcoves
Six individually heated stone alcoves are positioned around the garden's perimeter, each oriented toward a different compass point so guests can choose their view - harbour, hills, city grid, or the Rimutaka Range on clear days.
Year-Round Accessibility
A retractable weather canopy system covers 60 percent of the garden's footprint, ensuring the space remains usable during Wellington's frequent rain events without enclosing it entirely or losing the open-air quality.
Dawn Access for Residents
Hotel guests may access the rooftop from 5:30am - before general opening - through a key-card system, making it the quietest hour on the highest garden in the central city.
Private Garden Events
The rooftop can be reserved in full for groups of up to 40 for breakfast sessions, evening receptions, or product launches - catered directly from Ahi Kā's kitchen with no third-party coordination required.
Seasonal Planting Rotations
Three times per year the garden team introduces new plantings aligned with the New Zealand growing calendar - long-stay guests and returning visitors encounter a genuinely different environment with each visit, documented in a rooftop field journal available on-site.
